Mis en Scene

Hey there! Today I am analyzing the Mis en of multiple scenes in the amazing movie Scream 2! The scream franchise is my personal favorite as it is a mixture of horror and humor. :-)

Gale and Ghostface in the same room

The camera shot shows both Gale and Ghostface in the same room creating a lot of tension and stress. To add on the lighting in this scene focuses on Ghostface as he is the center of attention as it is a surprise the two characters are in the same room. Likewise, the dark lighting on Gale shows the seriousness of her situation. Moreover, the setting has symbolism as the scene takes place in the studio in the University, Ghostface being in the control room of the studio shows how Ghostface has control of the situation (later in the scene he "kills" a main character). The wall that Gale is hiding behind also shows her vulnerability in the scene as she is hiding from a killer.

                                                                    Mickey's eyes

This scene uses an extreme closeup focusing on Mickey's eyes, specifically his bloody eye. In this scene, Mickey is shot twice by his partner in crime. The low key lighting on his face shows the seriousness of the scene as the life leaves his eyes. The harsh shadows with barley any light on his face shows how dark this scene is. To add on, the focus on the blood shows how Mickey is vulnerable and on the verge of death. The framing in this shot shows his eyes after he got shot to show his last seconds of life.

Sydney and Mrs. Loomis

This camera angle is an over the shoulder shot to show the conversation between Mrs. Loomis and Sydney. The framing in this scene is done for you can focus on Mrs. Loomis and the gun in her hand pointed at Sydney. To continue, the framing also makes us focus on Mrs. Loomis’s face. When someone’s eyes are opened so wide you can see the whites of their eyes under and above the eyeball, that is usually the emotion of insanity or being petrified. In this scene, Mrs. Loomis has the look of insanity in her eyes when she points the gun at Sydney. Moreover, the gun prop is used to show who has the power in the scene, here Mrs. Loomis has the power and Sydney is vulnerable with no weapon or defense. Also, their clothing are opposite colors, everyone in the University wears bright colors except for Sydney, Mrs. Loomis wears bright colors to almost blend into the crowd and not stand out to the audience.

Sydney with her Boyfriend

This scene uses a medium shot of Sydney to show the parallel of Sydney and her boyfriend. The framing shows her boyfriend walking off waiting for Sydney, but the phone starts to ring (Ghostface is calling) and Sydney walks the opposite way. I personally think this symbolizes how Sydney’s boyfriend wants to help her but Sydney refuses to trust him and take the help because of her trauma with Ghostface. To add on, the sound effect of the phone ringing adds to the eeriness of the scene as the previous killings involve Ghostface calling the victims.

Gale and Dewey in the studio

This scene uses a medium shot to show Gale and Dewey separated by glass. The framing in this scene symbolizes their relationship as they've been distant and separated. The messy setting also symbolizes their messy and confusing relationship as lovers. Moreover, the low key lighting in this scene shows that the scene is evoking a serious mood as Ghostface is very close by,
