Title Research Research

Hi there! Today we're doing some research on the titles of movies. The purpose of titles is to grab the viewers’ attention from bold letter to capital letters, to convey a general idea of the film, and to set the atmosphere and tone of the film. Now that we've established the purpose of a title let us investigate title sequence from multiple movies their purpose.

Starting off strong we have The Lion King (2019). To start off, the title is big with all the letters being capital. The big letters instantly capture the viewers attention to the big bolded words, “LION KING.” Due to the first thing the viewers see being the words, “LION KING,” this allows them to instantly understand the general plot of the movie being about a lion that’s soon to be king. Also the words being bolded establishes the main and key information of Simba, the main character. Moreover, the word lion and king sets the mood of a wild kingdom of the Pride Landa of Africa.

Next, we have Home Alone (1990). First off I have to say this movie is a masterpiece and I watch this every Christmas. Any who, The first thing we can see about the title is how is blue despite everything in the movie is quite literally green and red. This shows how the main character, Kevin, is now feeling lonely and sad after "wishing" his family to disappear. Blue symbolizes sadness, depression, and negativity. To add on, one thing that's noticeable about the title is the 'e' in ALONe. It is lowercase while the others are capital. This shows how Kevin feels alone, left out, and overlooked, with a lack of attention despite his massive family.

And last but not least we have Stranger Things (2016). This is one of my favorite shows to watch with my family! To start, Stranger Things takes place in the 1980's and the retro color and the font of the title captures the time frame and the nostalgic feel perfectly. This instantly tells the audience that the show is taking place in the 1980's. To continue, the title Stranger Things just sounds eerie, this can already foreshadow how the show is a horror with a suspense. Also with the detail that strange things will happen, the audience can assume it is also a science fiction.
