Representation in My Film

Hey bloggers!! Today I'd like to address the representation in my film, What Lurks In The Dark. The main character in the film is depressed and mentally ill. I would say the representation in my film is for people who are mentally ill. Specifically depressed or have sleep paralysis. Usually people who are depressed either sleep too much or barley sleep. In our case our main character who is depressed cannot sleep due to sleep paralysis. This could make more awareness for sleep paralysis because I do feel it is a topic that is not talked enough on!! Although I have never gotten sleep paralysis, (luckily because I sleep all the time on my back especially) I have heard the horror stories of sleep paralysis from my friends.

I feel as this gives more representation towards people with depression as people usually have stereotypes for depression. I'd say the common stereotype that everyone thinks of when they hear the word depression, is suicide or just being overly sad. However, I think my film shines light on the other side of depression that people don't see. For example in my film, the person having sleep paralysis could be seen as a form of insomnia that some people may have in result of depression. But my film fits the common stereotype f depression as my character wears all black and can be seen as "emo."

Another form of representation is race. As I play the main character, I am very mixed. I usually just say I am Thai-American and Colombian but if I am feeling self conscious I just say that I'm Colombian or just white (lol). My family is very different and from around the world! My dad is Thai- American, his mom is Thai, and his dad is German American. My mom is full Colombian, her mom and dad are Colombian. So usually when someone asks me where I'm from, I don't know what to say! This shows more representation in my film for mixed people, especially Hispanic Asians. In the movie industry there usually isn't many mixed people, so seeing someone who is mixed can shed some light on the diversity of films. However, I do not think the movie industry is lacking diversity. For example, Disney is keeping up with the diversity of their films, some are good and some aren't as good, a prime example would definitely be the new live action Snow White movie showing more representation towards Hispanics, while the main character was supposed to be white.

Anyways, honorable mention of my family members!
