What is Sleep Paralysis?

What is Sleep Paralysis? Although my short film and blogs have been about sleep paralysis, have we answered the question, what is sleep paralysis? Well, in this blog we will answer that question. Welcome back bloggers to Jade Blogs!

Sleep paralysis is a temporary state of not being able to move or speak while being asleep or waking up. Although it is a common thing it hasn’t happened to me (luckily). Which is surprising into me since I sleep all the time. A lot of people tell me that sleep paralysis occurs when you sleep on your back. However, I’m sure it’s a myth as I sleep on my back ALL the time and it has not happened to me yet. Although while in sleep paralysis you cannot move or speak we decided to add the fact that you CAN move and speak in our film. The main character gets up and looks around and even screams. Although sleep paralsyis can occur to anyone, studies have shown that sleep paralysis is linked to stress and alcohol use. In our case in our film sleep paralysis is caused by depression and stress which causes the character to hallucinate and have sleep paralysis. In real life, sleep paralysis causes people to have vivid hallucinations, which people call their “sleep paralysis demon.” According to Dr. Kara Bagot, a Psychiatrist, she said, “Roughly 3/4 of people who experience sleep paralysis will also experience auditory, visual, tactile or other hallucinations also colloquially known as sleep demons.” Another cause of the sleep paralysis demon is the flight or fight response. Due to the person being unable to move or speak, the person may start to panic, triggering a flight or fight. This causes hallucinations in their panic.

After learning this information and watching our film about sleep paralysis. I feel the film will make more sense. Thank you for listening in bloggers, and I hope you learnt something new about sleep paralysis. During this time of doin research for my film, I definitely learnt something new!
