Representation in My Film

Image
Hey bloggers!! Today I'd like to address the representation in my film, What Lurks In The Dark. The main character in the film is depressed and mentally ill. I would say the representation in my film is for people who are mentally ill. Specifically depressed or have sleep paralysis. Usually people who are depressed either sleep too much or barley sleep. In our case our main character who is depressed cannot sleep due to sleep paralysis. This could make more awareness for sleep paralysis because I do feel it is a topic that is not talked enough on!! Although I have never gotten sleep paralysis, (luckily because I sleep all the time on my back especially) I have heard the horror stories of sleep paralysis from my friends.           I feel as this gives more representation towards people with depression as people usually have stereotypes for depression. I'd say the common stereotype that everyone thinks of when they hear the word depression...

Lighting

Image
Hi guys! Today, I would like to talk about the lighting in my film! My film is a horror film so the lighting should be dark and scary and not happy and bright. Our film consists of low key and natural lighting as we filmed in the dark and in Tati's house. We choose this style of lighting because natural lighting created a sense of something natural, something that would happen in everyday life. The natural light occurs when everything is calm. However we switch to a low key lighting when we recorded in the bedroom. We turned off all the lights and we then recorded. This created an eerie mood as anything could happen in the dark.      Not to get your hopes up, but Tati and I did not use 3 point lighting... Unfortunately, Tati and I did not have the equipment to use 3 point lighting. I think having 3 point lighting would have added to the mood of the film a little bit, but I do not think it would have made a big difference, which is why Tati and I...

Group Dynamic!

Image
Hi guys! Today I will talk about Tati and I's group dynamic! First off, I love Tati so so much. She is so sweet and a great person and friend! Even though Tati and I's personalities and completely different and complete opposites, we make a great team! I think Tati is a great team member and we're both pulling our weight.      Tati and I both came up with the storyboard, she wrote about it and I drew it. She is great at describing things and has a great vision for our film. I draw a lot so I was able to make her ideas come alive on the paper and we were both very satisfied and happy with our storyboard as it overall made the recording process wayyyyy easier. Tati was a big part in the filming process as well. When I needed to be on the screen for the film, Tati would record, and vise versa. She also did a great job acting like a monster for our film (LOL!) Tati also made the title sequences while I edit the film. She is giving me ideas for editin...

Little Ranting Session...

Image
Hey Bloggers!  I got copyrighted. I am going to do a bit of a rant on some of my struggles recently in regards to filming...     To start off, in one of my blog posts I had made a GRWM (get ready with me) and it was super cute!! It showed the process of me getting ready and a little sneak peak of bloopers and filming I did at Tati's house for the film. If you know me in real life, you know I ABSOLUTLEY LOVE K-pop! So of course, in the background music for my GRWM I used a K-pop song but the instrumental version. However, it got copyrighted so I am very sad since it was one of my favorite K-pop songs and such a cute video... But don't fret, I am going to reupload it with a new song! (probably Nintendo music or Lofi music) But now I have to listen to more music and see which ones match my video and give the same vibe as the K-pop song I originally had (and to make sure it is not actually copyrighted... T-T ) Alsooooo! I had a little set back due t...

Title Sequence

Image
Hi Bloggers! Tati and I are now adding our cool title sequence to our film at the end of the movie opener. What Tati and I are going for is sort of like the movie Scream! In the movie Scream, the movie opener happens and then the credits happen after the scene. So in our movie we are going to do the same thing. After I get jump scared in the movie, the title sequence will show.          We are using CapCut because CapCut is the best editing app (no debate there, only facts) I am NOT going to use Premiere Pro despite me getting adobe certified in that soon.. Premiere Pro is difficult and confusing for me to use, CapCut is just more simpler and wayyyyyyyyyy easier to use. Anyways, back to the topic, for the font we wanted a mysterious font that would make people attracted to our film because of the MYSTERY aspect of it. We used Criminal Minds, as an inspirarion as the type of title sequence we want!!      In the end, here a...

The Editing Process...

Image
Hey bloggers! As you already know I am editing our film. I am using the application, CapCut, a personal favorite of mine because of the simplicity and how easy you can use it. Currently as I am editing, I don't know what effects I am going to use right now. However, I think my film will be better without effects and filters. For the transitions, We use a regular cut for most of transitions so it will seem more smooth. I am half way done of editing and need to add my sounds and the rest of the clips I have filmed on my own time.  Now for the problems... If you're up to date with the news on 1/19/25, you'd know that TikTok was banned for 12 hours. However, before that I heard a rumor that CapCut was going to be banned alongside TikTok because they have some correlation or come from the same parent company. As I told my mom about this panicking, she told me to not worry and that it wouldn't get banned. Spoiler alert, it got banned. After it got banned I started to panic. ...

Sound!

Image
Hey bloggers! In my film a key aspect is sound since barley any words are spoken. As I begin the editing process, I realize how much sound and sound effects I must add. First, I recorded my own footsteps to add to my film. The sound of footsteps add a more realistic feel and will go with my eerie mood that we are going for in our film. After adding and recording my footsteps, I then went onto looking into music that will enhance our film. After doing research and watching many many videos, I found some background music that will add onto our movie. I am editing the movie and recording my footsteps. Both Tati and I are research music to add but Tati will be sending me the music she likes to add to he film. Also, most of the sounds in the film are diegetic sound as we are hearing what the main character is seeing and should be able to feel her fear in a way. Another issue we came across was making sure the music wasn't copyrighted, I'm not sure how we can tell if its copyright o...

Day 1 of Shooting!

Image
Hi bloggers! Recently, Tati and I did out first day of shooting our horror film. I was so nervous to record but I had a very fun time and I think our shooting went great. I arrived at Tati's house around 11 am and we started filming. W don't e need to reshoot since I have all the clips needed to start editing. We completed the shots necessary efficiently with the time we were given before Tati had to go to Volleyball practice. However, I do need to record my shower trim turning on and off. I was unable to turn on Tati's shower (which was very embarrassing but hilarious). We ended up making her shower leak somehow and I felt so bad, so I will record that portion at my house!!       But regardless of that, we don't need to reshoot, I looked through the clips and they were all perfect! The sound in the video was great as there aren't many words in the film. The video and quality in the video is great since Tati and I used our phones to record a...

Adding Sounds!

Image
Hey Bloggers! Today me and Tati are trying to figure out the soundtrack for our film! Since there are many many many songs out there, it is difficult to narrow down my options. Since this is a horror film after all, I need some music with an eerie, creepy and suspenseful vibe. After doing a lot of research and listening to countless soundtracks, I have chosen a few that I'd consider to add to my film. Also I need to make sure they aren't copyrighted.

Supporting Characters

Image
Hi bloggers! In my film we only have two characters, the main character and the monster. So in this post I will be talking about the supporting character, the monster!! >:D      The monster, which is played by Tati, is the main character's sleep paralysis demon. The monster is tall with a costume. The costume is different shades of gray and black. The fingers are long with a scary face with sharp teeth and deep black eyes. The monster is eerie and shows up in the film when the main character goes to bed. The monster doesn't talk but rather makes creepy noises and scratches at the walls to scare the main character.      The monsters mental state is aggression and rage with a lack of remorse. The monster scares the main character throughout the movie, haunting her every night during her sleep. The monster even jump scares the main character!! Because of the main characters depression which leads to stress, anxiety, and sleep deprivatio...

Color In My Project

Image
The use of color in my project is mainly with the color black. To start, the main character wears ALL black. This can symbolize many things, from evil, depressed, to being edgy, and anxious. The main character is indeed depressed. In this generation, wearing black makes you edgy and seen as "emo" or depressed, so that's why my character is wearing all black. The pajamas she wears is also black which can show that even when she is at her resting and at home she is still depressed and anxious. My character is also wearing all black makeup to add to an edgy look!      To continue with the black theme, the monster also has correlation with the color black. To start, the monster only shows up or appears in the film with its DARK. This evokes a sense of fear and anxiety to the user knowing the monster only shows up in the dark which is another reason she is wearing black. Remember that black can also symbolize anxiety/fear. The monster is also differe...

Main Character Analysis

Image
The main character is a short skinny girl with curly hair. She is dressed in all black from clothes, shoes, and even makeup. The main color on our character is most notably black. Black is usually associated with evil, anxiety and fear. Black that is associated with evil foreshadows the evil monster that haunts the main character. Also the monster only shows up when its all dark and black in the room. This also gives us clues on the character. Black symbolizes fear/anxiety and throughout the film the main character showcases fear when she is going to bed and hears and sees the monster. Also in this generation wearing all black usually means you are edgy or depressed. In our character's case she is depressed. Shown with the props, the main character takes depression pills hoping to make the monster haunting her to go away.

Costuming

Image
our film's costumes! To start, Tati's costume which is the monster, is a scary jumpsuit that she got from her cousin. The monster costume has a color palette of grays ranging from dark gray to light gray. The costume has a design that looks like scales and skin due to the patterns on the material. The fingers on the costume are so also freakishly long that Tati and I laughed about it for minutes on end. Now for the most noticeable feature... the face! The face is horrifying and would be even worse to see in the middle of the night at the corner of your room or maybe even in your face!! (hint hint at our movie) The face has an unsettling big smile with numerous sharp and long teeth. The eyes are round, big, and a deep black that is eerie. This costume was perfect for our film and truly horrifying!       To continue onto our main character's outfit, which is my outfit! Since my character is depressed, I tried to wear an "emo" outfit (according to my friends). I also...

Preparing to film

Image
Hi guys!!!! Today we're discussing what things we need to consider before we film. First lets start with our actors. Our actors is going to be Tati and I, Tati playing the sleep paralysis monster and me playing the character having the sleep paralysis. For costumes, Tati got a scary monster suit from her cousin, and since my character is depressed I will dress in more black and my makeup will have more black in it. For props, we have the pills, the shower, towel, water, and blanket that will all be used in our film. We are gonna film in Tati's house and the main places we'll be filming is the bathroom and the bedroom. We'll be filming on 1/2/25 at 11 AM. For film equipment, Tati and I are just gonna use our phones to record!! :))

Initial Storyboard

Image
Our storyboard starts with an establishing shot of the house during nighttime. The character gets ready for bed, taking a shower (boom shot) and looking at herself in the mirror. There will be many transitions mostly regular cuts or  quick cuts. Then the character takes pills (depression pills) and goes to bed. As she goes to bed, she is awoken by her sleep paralysis demon making noise (close up and full body shots). As the character is awoken suddenly the monster jump scares her.  (medium shot). This film will be short and easy to understand. I feel the simplicity will make this film great!     When Tati and I were creating this storyboard, I took charge to draw the storyboard right away. I have some experience with drawing because it is what I do in my free time and I've been drawing since I was little. Tati took care of which shots should happen in each scene, while also describing the scenes in detail so we'd know what to do when we film...
